In summary, the berm is performing well but needs further strengthening on the southern side. The balance of the berm, including buildings L and M, show no movement which is good news. A final report and engineering design to finalize the phase two construction of the berm with a safety factor of 1.5 is expected sometime in November, 2022. Bids will be obtained for construction costs and if all stakeholders agree to participate, work on the berm could begin early 2023.
In April, the City of St. George without warning issued orders to demolish buildings L & M, the old Dairy Queen, and the Knights Inn properties. In meeting with city officials, the hotel owner agreed to demolish the entire hotel building, which was accomplished in September. The city agreed to stay the demolition order on the other two properties subject to receipt by year end of a the above mentioned geotechnical design to finalize stabilization of the berm and prove that the subject buildings are not a danger to life or property. All stakeholders are waiting on the engineers to complete their report and design recommendations which hopefully will be accomplished sometime in November.
